Day 1: Arrival at Kanombe International Airport –Nyungwe National Park
You will be received by a representative from Africa Nature Trekkers and one of our drivers / safari guide at Kanombe International Airport who will welcome you and drive you to Nyungwe Forest National Park through winding scenic roads.
Day 2: Chimps Tracking &Nyungwe Forest Canopy Walk
Breakfast early morning and after you will proceed to the park headquarters for briefing. You will then be guided into the forest by the ranger where you will be able to see primate species including Colobus monkeys, forest birds and later, you will be able to see the chimpanzees when its already day time. Return to your lodge after the tracking for Lunch and in the afternoon, you will set out for the guided forest walk with in the Forest. Overnight at Gisakura Guest House / Nyungwe Forest Lodge
Day3: Guided Birding &Nature Trail
For birders a guided nature walk in the morning will enable them to spot a variety of bird species in the Nyungwe forest. You will not miss birds such as RwenzoriTuraco and black and white casqued hornbill. Large troops of colobus monkeys will be every time encountered on different forest trails. In the afternoon you will track chimpanzees. Overnight at Gisakura Guest House
Day4: Nyungwe National Park –ParcNational des Volcanoes
Have an early at your hotel and your guide will drive you off to Volcanoes National Park. The drive will take you via Lake Kivu were you will have clear views of the water body and take pictures of the beautiful area. Have lunch en route and continue with our interesting drive.
Day 5: Gorilla Tracking
After a heavy breakfast, you will be led to the ORTPN head offices for registration and briefing on the Gorilla tracking rules as early as 7.30AM. After this, you will be allocated a Gorilla tracking group. This very exciting activity will take you through the Virunga mountainous forest on its slopes. An encounter with the gorillas is the highlight of any Rwanda tour. Time taken to encounter these gentle apes ranges between 2 to 8 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas on that particular day. During the 1 hour of interacting with the great apes, you will get to know their behavior and feeding pattern. You can take as many pictures as you so wish. You will return to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you will take a tour to the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. This will offer you stunning panoramic views of the volcanic mountains.
Day 6: Dian Fossey Grave Hike
Wake up early for your breakfast, drive to the park headquarters for briefing the Golden Monkeys now listed as endangered because of their small numbers. You will be separated in groups of 6 people maximum, and the tracking will take most of the day. After the trek, return to the lodge for relaxation and later a community walks. You can opt to hike to the Karisoke Gorilla Research Centre which Dian Fossey, the famous primatologist set up.
Day 7: Transfer from Volcanoes – Kigali City Tour then Departure
Have breakfast at the lodge and later drive back to Kigali for a city tour. Expect to tour historical places like the genocide memorial site, the national museum. Later have lunch en-route to the airport to keep in time for your departure flight.
