Journey the beaten-track as well as discover the less-known East! climb Mount Elgon, to the Wagagai peak to look into the splendid Karamojong plains
Day 1: Arrival
You will be received by a representative from Africa Nature Trekkers and one of our driver / safari guides at Entebbe International Airport. Basing on your arrival time, the guide will drive you around on a city tour for a thrilling introduction to the capital city. Visit various fascinating plus historical sites, such as the Kasubi Tombs, the Uganda Museum, the African Craft Village and the Uganda Martyrs Shrine at Namugongo. We also recommend that you get your money changed into the local currency today. Dine and slumber at Cassia Lodge.
Day 2: Kampala – Jinja
Following breakfast in the early morning, we depart from the capital and drive towards Jinja, to see the source of the great river Nile. Along the way, we will stop by Mabira Forest. Hikers will get the opportunity to enjoy a short walk in this stunning forest, with sights of a variety of primates, butterflies as well as birds. There are several alternatives this day, among which are visiting the Bujagali Falls, the Source of River Nile, floating down the tricky rapids or unwinding on the banks of River Nile. Dine and slumber at The Haven.
Day 3: Jinja – Transfer to Mt. Elgon
We leave Jinja and head to the undiscovered eastern Uganda. Going through Mbale; a pleasant town at the bottom of Mount Elgon. This town is blessed with a rich and fascinating cultural heritage. Enjoying several spectacular sights along the way, we will arrive at Sipi Village, located between Mount Elgon and the waterfalls. Following lunch at our accommodation, we will take pleasure in a hike to the beautiful Sipi Falls. Walking past African bandas, maize fields plus banana plantations as we will ascend through the series of the waterfalls. Dine and slumber at Lacam Lodge.
Day 4: Piswa Camp
Following a heavy breakfast we will drive to Kapkwata which is at 2190m, there we will begin our hike, along the Kapkwata-Trail. The route is very spectacular going through the moorland plus bamboo and heath, to arriving at Piswa Camp which is at 2850m. Dine and slumber at Piswa-Hut-Campsite.
Day 5: Hunters Cave Camp
Trek up to the edge of the caldera going through stunning columns of exceptional as well as endemic species of plants such as the giant Lobelia-elgonensis. And also marvel at the various wild ceaseless flowers. Go to the hot-springs plus Suam Gorge prior to descending 3850 meters to the Hunters-Cave-Camp. Dinner and sleep at Hunters-Cave-Camp.
Day 6: Mude Cave Camp
After an early breakfast, ascend up the peak of the caldera to the ultimate Wagagai Peak found at 4321m. Afterwards descend past the Jackson summit at 4200m as well as the Jackson-pool to later arrive at Mude-Cave-Camp which is at 3500m. Dine and sleep at Mude-Cave-Camp.
Day 7: Mount Elgon – Transfer to Kampala
After an early breakfast, descend following the Sasa-trail to Budadiri and from there return to the town of Mbale. Following a hefty lunch in the tranquil Mbale town, we will drive back to Kampala where we will unwind as we reflect on our hike up Uganda’s 2nd highest summit. Dine and slumber at Cassia Lodge.
Day 8: Departure
Filled with memories of a fun-filled lifetime-experience on Mount Elgon, you will bid farewell to the Pearl-of-Africa. And basing on your departure time, you might enjoy some moments in Kampala city shopping for a good souvenir. Alternatively depart early for the town of Entebbe to visit the (UWA) Uganda Wildlife Education Centre for an ultimate view of the striking plant and animal life of Uganda.
